Join us for this year's Annual Science Talk either in person or online. The Annual Science Talk is given by an eminent marine expert making significant contributions to their field.
It is hosted prior to the Marine Biological Association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is also being held at our main site, Plymouth. If you are a Member, please consider making a day of it and attending both . If you are attending both the AGM and Annual Science talk please book appropriate tickets for both events.
*Please note our in person spaces are limited. If all spaces are taken please still join us online!
This year's speaker, Professor Peter W H Holland FMBA FRS is a Linacre Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford.
This years talk focuses on Why sequence every genome?
As little as 5 years ago, determining the complete DNA sequence (genome) of an animal species was seen as a major achievement. Recent advances have changed the picture entirely. In just a few years, a collaborative project involving the University of Oxford, the Marine Biological Association, the Wellcome Sanger Institute and others have reported the genome sequences of almost 2000 species and are sequencing 50 more every month. But why? What can we learn from a genome sequence? What biological surprises are being uncovered? And are we entering a new era of data-driven biology?
