One important aspect of the biodiversity crisis is a trend of homogenisation in ecological communities. That is, the communities inhabiting a given place tend to become increasingly similar to communities inhabiting other places, threatening the diversity of habitats and ecosystems on Earth. However for marine plankton, we don’t know if this homogenisation trend applies, but the data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey could help figure that out.
Here, I present an investigation of potential homogenisation trends in marine plankton of the North West European Seas between 1960 and 2020. I found important changes in the biodiversity of marine plankton in the region but no overarching homogenisation trend. Instead, the story appears more complex with plankton biodiversity shaped by specific characteristics of communities and the locations they inhabit.
