Young Marine Biologist Club: What is marine snow, and how does it affect carbon cycling in the sea?

Saskia grew up in Germany and moved to the UK after finishing school in 2010, to study Coastal Marine Biology at Scarborough Campus, which was a part of the University of Hull back then. Following graduation, she moved to Plymouth to pursue the Master of Research in Marine Biology offered by Plymouth University. Throughout that course, she made connections at both the Marine Biological Association (MBA) and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), and completed her final research project at PML. After graduating, Saskia worked at the National Marine Aquarium for a little while as an assistant aquarist and diver, before starting to take on contracted lab work on a self-employed basis. To get back into an academic career in science, she then carried out a PhD in bentho-pelagic marine biogeochemistry (how biological, physical and chemical drivers affect exchanges between seafloor and water in the sea). For the duration of the PhD, she was enrolled at Southampton University, but worked at PML and lived in Plymouth. After successfully defending her thesis, Saskia went straight on to her first postdoctoral job, which is where she still works today. This current employment is in the Carbon Cycling Institute at the Helmholtz Centre Hereon in Geesthacht, Germany, where Saskia investigates the roles of particles and plankton in biological carbon cycling
