Talk summary: Plastic debris is widely distributed in the environment. It is in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Over 1000 species are known to encounter marine litter, with widescale reports of harm resulting from entanglement in and ingestion of plastic. At the same time, it is very clear that plastic items bring many societal benefits.

Can these benefits be achieved without the current levels of environmental pollution? Progress requires systemic changes in the way we produce, use and dispose of plastic. Is the UN Plastics Treaty on track to deliver?
