Field Studies Council - Marine Science Camp - 2026 - Eva
(C) Field Studies Council
During the summer I attended a residential Marine Science Camp at Slapton Ley (Devon), run by the Field Studies Council in partnership with the Marine Biological Association. Over 5 amazing and busy days, we participated in various activities including an interactive call with the E/V Nautilus, a VIP tour of the National Marine Aquarium, a fascinating talk from a local wildlife photographer, a visit to the Plymouth University Marine Station and a day rock pooling at Prawle Point (there was a lot of hermit crabs!).
My favourite experience was the boat trip on the research vessel MBA Sepia. We were introduced to the boat, equipment that is frequently used including underwater cameras and took part in sampling sediment from the seabed.
On the last day we visited a local charity ‘Till the Coast is Clear’ at their sorting centre. This was a brilliant opportunity to get hands on in helping our ocean and making a difference. This memorable week has shown me the wide variety that there is in the marine biology sector and the many different ways to get involved. Most importantly, I spent the week with a group of amazing people and know that I have made some lifelong friends.
This experience has inspired me to continue taking action for our ocean and shown me how even the smallest choices can be impactful.
