Postdoctoral Research Assistant
The Marine Biological Association
Hours: 37 hours per week (Full time)
About The Role
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join the Algal Signalling and Stress Physiology group led by Dr Glen Wheeler at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth. The successful candidate will work on an exciting Leverhulme Trust funded project to examine the evolution of cell signalling mechanisms in unicellular algae.
Multicellular organisms, such as animals and plants, have developed mechanisms for cell-cell communication that allow transmission of information over long distances and coordination of responses at the whole organism level. However, we do not know what factors have driven the emergence of these highly complex signalling networks, as cell-cell signalling in unicellular eukaryotes remains largely unexplored. This project will examine cell-cell communication in unicellular algae, using marine diatoms as a model system. Diatoms are an abundant group of algae that can form large blooms and underpin productivity in many aquatic ecosystems. We recently discovered that diatoms possess sophisticated signalling mechanisms for cell-cell communication that resemble those found in many multicellular organisms. The project will explore the physiological and ecological roles of cell-cell communication in diatoms and examine the wider presence of these mechanisms in other eukaryote lineages. The project will therefore identify novel signalling processes in unicellular organisms and shed light on the evolution of complex signalling networks in multicellular organisms.
This PDRA position will focus on algal cell biology. Candidates will have experience in cell physiology and genetic manipulation (ideally in algae), with expertise in fluorescent microscopy and cell signalling.
We are looking for a passionate, team-oriented, independent-thinking individual with a PhD or equivalent in plant/algal biology with skills in molecular biology and microscopy. You will also have the experience and ability to lead scientific experimental design and implementation, as well as independent scientific writing. You will join a dynamic, supportive research group valuing trust, responsibility, inclusivity and cooperation, and working on diverse aspects of algal physiology and molecular biology. The Principal Investigator will provide in-depth training and supervision of the candidates (in algal physiology, cell and molecular biology as well as advanced microscopy) through regular meetings both 1-2-1 and with the wider team. Additionally, the PDRA will have the opportunity to present at national and international conferences, develop skills in preparing manuscripts and grant writing, and engage in activities to further their professional development. The successful applicant will joining a vibrant research community within the MBA with substantial expertise in marine microbiology and molecular cell biology.
